Real Action For Kids
Friday, May 22 through Monday, May 25, 2026 (Memorial Day Weekend).
The competition is open to young filmmakers ages 6–20 – you don’t need to be in Hawaii.
Entries open January 15, 2026.
All films must be submitted by April 1, 2026 by 5pm HT.
Films about causes that matter to you, such as stories, social issues, environment, or things in your community.
Our competition committee will review all entries and choose the films to screen at the festival. We’re looking for films that tell authentic stories, spark conversations and show us what young people care about. Additionally some might be chosen because they are just plain FUN!
Films from Maui youth will be featured at the festival along with international cause-based children’s films.
No. The competition is open to young filmmakers anywhere in Hawai’i. And around the world.
Monday, May 25, 2026 (Memorial Day -the final day of the Be Reel Child & Youth Film Festival).
Awards are given in each age category (6–11, 12–16, 17–20) and each cause category (Social, Community, Environmental).
There is also an Audience Choice Award. Festival attendees vote for their favorite film, and the winner is announced on Monday, May 25.
Yes, adults can help. But the key creative roles must be done by people 20 or under. That means roles like the director, producer, writer, director of photography (DOP), editor or animator.
For everyone else on your crew (camera operators, sound, assistants), at least 75% need to be 20 or under.
So if you have 4 crew members, at least 3 need to be 20 or under. If you have 8 crew members, at least 6 need to be 20 or under.
That’s great! Solo filmmakers are absolutely welcome. If you’re director, writer, camera operator and editor all in one — that counts.
A selection committee reviews all entries. They’re looking for:
Technical quality matters less than the story you’re telling. We adjust our expectations based on your age group.
A film made by a 7-year-old will be judged differently than one made by a 19-year-old.
Everyone! The festival is open to the whole community.
There’s nothing like having an audience watch something you made. We’d love to see you if your film is selected, but you don’t need to come. If you attend, you’ll also get to meet other young filmmakers.
No. If you want to attend the festival, you’ll need to make your own travel arrangements. Be Reel and Imua Family Services do not cover travel costs or expenses.
It’s a simple way to participate if you’re not ready to make a full film.
Answer one question on video: “What would make your day better?”
You have 15–60 seconds. Everyone who uploads an answer gets included in a film that premieres at the festival.
Yes. If your child is under 18, you’ll need to give permission when they register.
Simple consent forms are part of the entry process for both the film competition and Make My Day Better.
That’s normal! Many young filmmakers work with parents, teachers or mentors. The key creative roles need to be held by people 20 or under, but adults can support the process.
Yes. All films are reviewed before screening. We don’t accept explicit content.
We’re committed to creating a supportive and safe space for young voices.
